Department of Defense Must Immediately Provide Guidance and Support to Military Families Targeted for Discrimination by Texas Governor

WASHINGTON — The Modern Military Association of America — the nation’s oldest and largest LGBTQ+ military and veteran nonprofit organization — expresses deep alarm over Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s attempt to target transgender young people and their families through discriminatory threats. The organization also called on the Department of Defense to provide immediate guidance and support for military families stationed in Texas.

“Thousands of LGBTQ+ military and veteran families and their allies, especially those stationed in Texas, are deeply alarmed by Governor Abbott’s shameful decision to single out transgender and non-binary youth and their families through harmful and discriminatory actions,” said Jennifer Dane, chief executive officer of the Modern Military Association of America. “It’s critical that the Department of Defense provide immediate guidance and support to impacted military families stationed in Texas and make clear they will be protected from this outrageous and unlawful target the Texas Governor has placed on their backs. The Department of Defense has a solemn responsibility to protect all military families from deeply harmful actions like this.”

The Modern Military Association of America has requested immediate guidance from the Department of Defense and asked that requests from impacted military families for changes to pending PCS orders be approved, as well as compassionate reassignments requests.
