It is with profound sadness that we acknowledge the tragic loss of Vanity Williams, an Air Force veteran and nursing student, who was recently murdered in Texas. Vanity is the third victim in Texas and the 25th transgender individual to be violently killed this year. This heartbreaking statistic is a stark reminder of the pervasive violence that continues to threaten the lives of transgender individuals, particularly African American women.

Vanity’s service to our country deserves to be honored, and her aspirations to continue serving others in the nursing field reflect the strength and courage she embodied. Yet, her untimely death is a devastating example of the broader, systemic issues that disproportionately affect transgender women of color.

The growing prevalence of policies that target transgender individuals contributes to a climate of intolerance and hostility. These policies not only undermine the rights and dignity of transgender people but also have a rippling effect that emboldens acts of violence and discrimination.

As we mourn Vanity’s loss, we must also recognize the unfortunate pattern of violence that has taken her life and the lives of so many others. This pattern is a call to action—a reminder that we must redouble our efforts to protect the rights and lives of transgender individuals. We must stand against the forces of hate and discrimination that seek to marginalize and endanger the most vulnerable among us.

We honor Vanity Williams’ memory by continuing the fight for justice and equality, ensuring that her legacy is one of change and progress.
