For the first time in history, our nation recognizes September 20th as LGBTQ+ Veterans Day! As we commemorate the 13th anniversary of the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” Modern Military is pleased to work on and support the introduction of the LGBTQ+ Veterans Day resolution by Senator Jeff Merkley. It is a significant milestone in recognizing the invaluable contributions of LGBTQ+ service members and veterans. Moreover, it acknowledges the historical harm caused by discriminatory policies which led to the unjust discharge of countless LGBTQ+ individuals. This resolution reaffirms our nation’s commitment to supporting LGBTQ+ veterans and ensuring they receive the recognition, respect, and benefits they deserve.

Today, we celebrate the resilience and courage of LGBTQ+ service members and veterans while acknowledging the work that remains to ensure true equality. With proclamations from Washington, Illinois, New Jersey, Colorado and, DC, and the support of a Senate resolution, today we take a monumental step toward visibility and justice for LGBTQ+ service members and veterans.

This isn’t just a day of recognition—it’s a reminder that the fight for equality continues. Join us in celebrating this historic moment and advocating for the rights of all who serve. Thank you to our partners in this work – Minority Veterans of America, Mayor’s Office of Veterans Affairs (MOVA) for the District of Columbia, Equality Illinois, and the many individuals who made these resolutions possible through their advocacy.
