MMAA is relieved that the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) successfully passed both the House and Senate without any of the proposed anti-equality measures. This significant milestone reinforces our nation’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse military environment.

We commend the bipartisan effort that led to a bill free from discriminatory provisions and recognizes the dedication of lawmakers who prioritized equality in our armed forces. The absence of such measures in the NDAA is a step in the right direction.

However, while we celebrate this achievement, MMAA remains disappointed by continuing the current Department of Defense (DoD) policy regarding drag shows and drag queen story hours. The FY 2024 NDAA Conference Report H.R. 2670 States: The DoD Office of General Counsel determined that drag queen story hours did not serve a legitimate DoD public affairs interest nor was this an appropriate association for the DoD.

Censorship of LGBTQ-friendly events sends the message to LGBTQ+ members of the armed forces that wearing their preferred clothing or acting in a manner different from the gender assigned to them at birth is unacceptable. It also denies the long history of drag in the military as a form of morale-boosting entertainment which was formally embraced by the DoD when it enabled the military to raise millions of dollars for the Army Emergency Relief Fund. The implication by the DoD that drag events are an inappropriate association for the military but that risqué models at air shows on military installations are allowable creates unequal standards for gendered performance and an appearance of homophobia and LGBTQ+ discrimination. MMAA supports a more inclusive and open-minded approach to building a military that reflects the diversity of our nation. We urge the DoD to reconsider its stance on this matter.

MMAA looks forward to continued collaboration with policymakers, advocacy groups, and military leaders to create a more inclusive and progressive environment for all LGBTQ+ service members, veterans, and their families. By fostering an environment that celebrates diversity, we can strengthen our armed forces and ensure every service member feels valued and respected.
